Secluded place dominated by Goethe´s bench

Cheb received another pleasant restful secluded place. It was established on a site below the Skalka dam embankment, disfigured up to 2016 by heaps of mess and building remains, used by homeless people to sleep in. This piece of land, which is situated very close to the walking route along the Ohře River, was bought in execution by the town for 600 thousands crowns. Subsequently the building remains and a sphinx statue of not a very good taste, built by the previous owner, were removed and the site was cleaned up by the town.

Afterwards the town´s Foundation fund Historic Cheb pursued further alterations. A new secluded place was created, dominated by Goethe´s bench. A memorial plaque on a nearby rock reminds of frequent Goethe´s walks, which he has undertaken during his visits of Cheb with his friend, the councillor Grüner. Goethe´s bench is similar to other two preserved stone benches, which can be seen on the opposite slope below the Sova House of children and youth, but semi-circular in this case.

During the restoration of the site, which cost around a million crowns and was financed by the town and the Foundation fund Historic Cheb with contribution of the Cheb Forest Foundation, stone walls were also built, and tamped paths, steps and new plants were set in.
